History of R.G. Communications.

In 1974 the two present partners of R.G. Communications saw the need for a company specialising in the efficient servicing of two-way radio communication equipment. At that time relatively few manufactures were producing products for the Private Mobile Radio market and prices of equipment were high, compared to other business expenses. For example, a Philips CMT F.M. radio cost around £200.00, and a new Ford Escort was about £1000.00. Servicing of equipment was therefore required, since it was quite costly to replace radios.

Richard Whiting's Father had a shop at 13 Station Parade, Feltham, Middlesex, selling do-it-yourself products, and at the rear of the shop was a derelict garage. This had 3 walls, but no door or roof, and he offered it to us at a very low rent. During the month of June, 1974, we fitted a roof and re-built the garage, installing a radio workshop with second-hand test equipment and prepared for the rush of eager customers !  Our combined savings were running rather low, but gradually we began to attract work. The companies that we had previously worked for ( FieldTech Ltd and T.V. Aerials ) both started using our services and soon we moved into profit.

Over the next few years we increased business steadily. We outgrew the garage, and took over the whole shop in Station Parade. The owner of the property finally agreed to sell it, and with a Bank loan we purchased the whole property, including the large flat above it. The shop front enabled us to offer a domestic repair service to the public, and for a while we employed a shop manager to look after that side of things. During this period lower cost two-way radios began to appear, and we became agents for Callbuoy and then Cleartone products. Sales of new equipment expanded rapidly and contributed more than service work to the company income. By 1980 we had re-paid the Bank loan and decided to move to larger premises. This was at 165 Stanwell Road, Ashford, about 3 miles from Feltham.

Around this time we tendered for, and obtained, a large quantity of high-quality surplus radio equipment. This had previously been used on the London Radiophone service, which was closing down due the advent of Cellular radio. We re-designed these radios, fitting a new dash control panel, converting them to 12.5 kHz channel spacing and we successfully obtained type-approval for single and multi-channel Base and mobile versions. Eventually we converted and sold about two hundred of these radios, which we christened KOMET 25's . Quite a lot of these radios are still in use near the end of the century and they have proved to be one of the most rugged, reliable model of radio that we have ever sold.

During 1990 the building at Stanwell Road (which was owned by the actor, Stanley Meadows) became due to be demolished, and we found new premises at Napier House, Napier Road, Ashford.

We operated from Napier House until November, 2007 when this building was also demolished !

Our new address is : P.O. Box 298, Ashford, TW15 2AD.
